Last night I watched an amazing documentary exploring the concept of incorporating a raw food diet to reverse diabetes. While I am certainly not an expert on raw food diets or suggesting any medical advice, I think it’s an important to understand how diet effects not only our body composition but diseases that can be directly related to obesity. I want to explore the definition of diabetes, explain how low glycemic foods and diet can benefit your weightloss goals and my thoughts specifically on the documentary. (more…)

You’ve heard your Personal Trainer say it a thousand times “eat more protein!” And whether you are a cardio queen who’s focus is weight loss and losing inches around the waist, or a hardcore bodybuilder who wants to add inches to his biceps, this is good advice. Protein shakes and meal bars are great quick fixes for on the go people but the best nutrition sources are real food. No trainer or nutrition supplement rep can deny that.
Sometimes the last thing you want to do at the end of the day is come home from work and have to prepare yourself a good high protein meal. As prepared as we may try to be, planning out or making meals ahead of time isn’t always easy either. Calories burned in Spin Class is among the highest for any aerobic class you may attend. Of course the total benefits achieved from spin class, also referred to as indoor cycling, are dependent on how much effort you exert. This afternoon I took a spin class after a 6-7 week absence and was reminded again how great it is as a fat burning workout. Over the years much discussion and debate in the Fitness and Nutrition industry has revolved around the benefits of BCAA’s or Branched Chain Amino Acids as a supplement. I’m not interested in debating the merits of any specific supplement really, but rather share with you my personal experiences and those of clients.
What are BCAA’s?
Branched chain amino acids or BCAAs are nutrients obtained from proteins such as dairy, legumes, and meat. On a molecular level, 3 essential components leucine, isoleucine, and valine form a branched chain chemical structure.
Ummm, so what’s that mean? Basically this is protein in its simplest form, and these 3 amino acids are part of a family of 9 essential amino acids which the body cannot manufacture itself. (more…)
